Turner Square Eco Hub

Better known as Shrigey Road toilet block, this redundant building
will be re-named
once it has been refurbished and turned into a small office and
environmental demonstration and advice centre.
This redundant building was going to be demolished until BIT suggested
that it might be reformed into something of use. Macclesfield Borough
Council agreed and enabled BIT to take it over and re-develop it
for public benefit. It has been agreed that it should
be used as an advice centre for the Bollington Carbon Revolution
group
who are promoting good practice with respect to energy use, recycling,
and are also hoping to develop hydro power generation on Bollington's
rivers. All we need now is some funding to redevelop the building
and get it back into productive use.
Tree management
 |
Before the work started (left), the trees overwhelmed
the toilet block and were very much overdue to be thinned
and cut back.
All those trees along the back wall are Beech trees providing
a beautiful show in autumn. These have been reduced in number,
about a third being removed. Those remaining have been pruned
to remove the low branches, opening the site up to the light.
The green tree on the left of the picture was a Sycamore
and has been removed to prevent it causing further damage
to the stonework on the roadside. |
 |
17 November 2009 - the thinning begins. The Sycamore on
the left is being cut down. The work is being carried out
by Bollington tree surgeon Steve Mitchell and his team.
|
 |
17 November 2009 - the brushwood has been chipped and
will be composted. The logs are being distributed free of
charge for domestic log fires.
As a child living in the country I was taught that logs
warmed you up three times - once when you felled the tree,
again when you sawed it up for logs and finally when you
put your feet up in front of the fire! |
