Several people indicated an interest in re-forming the Bollington Civic Society Historical Group and I requested to hear from those who would be interested. A significant number of people responded to this request and a meeting for everyone to discuss the way ahead was held on Monday 28th March 2011. Background and ideas document.

The Historical Group organises history walks through the most interesting parts of Bollington. These are free and open to anyone with an interest in Bollington history. Watch this web site for announcement of further walks.

The original group existed in the 1970s, 80s and early 90s, although Dr John Coope was researching on his own and with Harry Cole from the early 1960s. The group undertook a major amount of basic research on Bollington and its industries. They were responsible for writing and publishing several of the very popular books about Bollington history. They were also responsible for the collection and cataloguing of the historic picture collection, prompted by Dr John who collared every patient at the Waterhouse to bring out their albums! The principle historians were George Longden, Molly Spink and Roger Bowling. They were supported by James Hough, Christabel Burgess, G R Alexander, Geoff Coe, A Fearnhead, Brenda King, David King and others. There is more about this group on the acknowledgements page. Molly Spink remains active in this work assisting in the transcription of the cataloguing information into the Discovery Centre picture database. Roger Bowling has been researching coal mining around Macclesfield in recent years. Brenda King has done much in the research and study of Macclesfield's silk industry. George Longden wrote the wonderful history of the area around Kerridge hill for the KRIV project. I am not aware that any of the others remain active in historical research but would be pleased to be updated.

I have very slowly been collecting historic items for the Discovery Centre collection and also writing up bits of history in web pages, often drawing on the work done by the original team. But there is a need to undertake more orderly, and more professional, research than I am able to do.

So, if any of undertaking historical research, history recording, history exhibits at the Discovery Centre and elsewhere, extending the picture collection into modern times, leading history walks around the town, and writing papers, books, and web pages on historical matters, interests you please let me know and I will set up a meeting to discuss the possibilities further. I anticipate this becoming, as it was before, a subsidiary group of Bollington Civic Society.
