logo Three in Court over allegations of inciting disorder via social networking sites

Three people appeared in Cheshire Courts this morning (11 August 2011) charged in connection with allegations of inciting public disorder through postings on social networking sites.

Two men - a 24 year old from Runcorn, and a 22 year old from Warrington - appeared before Halton Magistrates Court. A 16 year old male from Macclesfield appeared before Macclesfield Magistrates Court. All 3 were charged during the course of Wednesday evening, and have been remanded in police custody for court.

The arrests follow a robust approach by Cheshire Police to any individuals suspected of promoting criminality via social networking sites. As part of the approach a number of young people have received police advice in the presence of their parents around postings on their social networking sites, or messages forwarded onwards via social media.

Once again, there were no incidents of significant disorder in Cheshire overnight.

Cheshire Police are continuing to thank the communities of Cheshire for the support offered and the information put forward.

No disorder in Cheshire

As of lunchtime today (Wednesday 10th August 2011), there have been no significant incidents of public disorder in Cheshire.

Police have maintained a high visibility presence within communities, and any offences have been robustly dealt with.

Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of inciting public disorder following postings on social networking sites. Two further arrests have been made in connection with anti-social behaviour. A number of young people have been spoken to with their parents, and advice given regarding entries on social networking sites, or comments passed via Twitter. Police will continue to monitor on line activity, and call to account anyone who appears to be promoting criminality.

During the last 24 hours police have seen an increase in the number of calls from members of the public. The majority of calls relate to postings on social networking sites which cause local people concern. All calls are being followed up, and some have led directly to arrests.

Cheshire Police has provided support to the Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police, and a number of officers are assisting in those areas. In addition to this, many officers have had their rest days cancelled and are working extra hours to ensure that the communities of Cheshire continue to enjoy the high level of service expected from their local police teams.

As part of joint work with partner agencies, advice is available to local retailers and businesses by police, fire, and council staff. In addition to this, police would like to thank local employers who have released members of the Special Constabulary from their daily jobs, in order to volunteer their services alongside those of their regular police colleagues.

Finally, Cheshire Police would like to thank the communities of Cheshire for the information they have provided which has assisted the Constabulary in taking action, and for their support of officers as they go about their duties.
