Mini motorbikes
I have been asked several times for information regarding the driving of mini motorbikes by young people (which seems to be a craze at the moment).
- These bikes cannot be used on the highway without the driver holding a current driving licence and having insurance and an MOT (if necessary). Those caught riding on the road without the appropriate documentation will be dealt with by police in the normal way under the Road Traffic Act, ie. points on licence, fine or a ban. The police will also sieze the motorbike and it will only be returned to the owner if a valid insurance certificate or driving licence can be produced.
- These vehicles can be used on a designated track or on private land with the permission of the owner. Sometimes they are used on a local patch of land which can then become an annoyance to local residents. If you are suffering from this kind of antisocial behaviour in your area please contact your local Neighborhood Policing Unit and report the problem. A police officer will then visit the site and issue warnings under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002.
If problems continue then officers may sieze vehicles under Section 59 and this will then cost the owners to get the vehicles back.
