Setting your wallpaper picture to fill
the screen
The wallpaper picture is designed to fill an 800 x 600 screen.
However, most modern systems are configured to have a 1024 x
768 screen or even more. The picture of Bollington can quite
easily be made to fill this screen area. Just follow this procedure:
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 using your browser:
It is possible to set the wallpaper using your browser, unless
you have Chrome (see below).
- On the Wallpaper page click on the picture of your choice.
This will display a larger copy in your browser.
- Right click on the picture and, depending on which browser
you use ...
- Internet Explorer - click on 'Set as Background';
- Firefox - click on 'Save as Desktop Background...';
- Opera - click on 'Use Image on Desktop';
- Chrome - no easy option! See below.
Job done.
The picture will expand to fill the entire desktop screen.
Windows, Google Chrome browser:
There is no easy option to set wallpaper in Chrome so you need
to follow the Windows method:
- Clear your screen by clicking the 'Show Desktop' button in
the task bar below left;
- Right click on the screen background and select 'Properties';
- Click the 'Desktop' tab at the top;
- Look for the 'Position' field near the bottom right;
- Click the list arrow and select 'Stretch';
- Click OK.
The picture will now expand to fill the entire screen.
Windows 98 (all versions) Is there anyone out there still
using this OS?!:
- Clear your screen by clicking the 'Show Desktop' button in
the task bar below left;
- Right click on the screen background and select 'Properties';
- Click the 'Background' tab at the top left;
- Look for 'Picture Display' near the bottom right;
- Click the list arrow and select 'Stretch';
- Click OK.
The picture will now expand to fill the entire screen.
Older Windows operating systems are not capable of taking this
procedure.
Apple Mac:
There are no easy options in Mac browsers ...
- Decide which picture you want to use and ensure it is saved
on your Mac;
- Minimise any open programs (only so that you can see the result
of changing your wallpaper);
- Click on the apple (extreme left of the command bar);
- Click on 'Sytem Preferences...'
- Click on the 'Desktop & Screen Saver' icon;
- Click the 'Desktop' button near the top of the window;
- Select the picture you wish to use;
- Click on the menu list to the right of the picture and select
'Stretch to fill screen';
- Hey presto! Your selected picture should now display in the
background.
Some modified browsers such as BT Yahoo! and, no doubt, AOL
display different options when you right click. This is also
the case with the relatively new Google Chrome browser. In this
case you need to do long hand what the option would have done
in a single click. It is too complex to be worth the bother for
most people. Sorry!
However, if you know what you are doing and know how to do it
(under XP) you need to:
- Save the file in c:\Documents and Settings\[your userid]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer , as Internet Explorer Wallpaper.jpg
;
- If there is a file of this name .bmp in there already you
may like to rename it in place;
- Load the .jpg into any picture editor and save it back to
the same folder as a .bmp ;
- Delete the .jpg file;
- The picture should now display as the wallpaper. If not ...
- Clear all or some of your screen, right click on the present
wallpaper and select Properties;
- Click on the Desktop tab;
- Scroll the list of Backgrounds and click on Internet Explorer
Wallpaper;
- Click on OK.
