Let’s get fired up for blood donation!
Remember, remember the 5th of November ...
... and while you’re at it, remember those thousands of people
across England and North Wales who rely on blood transfusions every
day to save or improve their lives.
The National Blood Service (NBS) is aiming to increase the number
of blood donors during the winter months as regular donors often
can’t give blood because of seasonal illnesses.
Local hospitals need over 5000 units of blood every week to treat
patients involved in accidents or to treat complications in childbirth
or those suffering from illnesses like cancer or anaemia so the
need for blood is constant.
Anyone aged over 17, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12 lbs)
and in general good health could potentially start saving lives
by becoming a blood donor. To book an appointment call the new
'Donor Line' on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk .
If you have never donated before you can find further details about blood donation on our website www.blood.co.uk ,
which explains why we need people to give blood, how it is used
and where we host donation sessions. You can also find details
about medical or travel reasons that may prevent people from donating.
If there are any other ways in which you can support the National
Blood Service, such as distributing leaflets amongst your colleagues,
putting up posters for us or by enquiring about a session at your
workplace you can also contact us through the website. If you have
any medical enquiries about giving blood you can call 08457 711 711
to speak to a member of staff in confidence.
Each donation can be used to save up to three lives so by donating you would be making a real difference. Please give blood, it could be someone you know that needs blood - one day it could be you!
